I'm an ex-mutual fund accountant who left the cubicle world to be a stay-at-home dad to my beautiful little girl, Avery, who entered our life on 11/15/13. Also happily married to my wife, Kelley, for 7 years as of 8/17/14. Sorry ladies... :) Fitness and nutrition is of the upmost importance in our family and we strive to reflect this in our daily life. I always prepare our meals at home and only go out if it's a special occasion, and even then I tend to not get much. Food should be fun and a joy to eat, not something quickly consumed from a fast food chain or scarf down before the next meeting. I have come from strictly logging high miles to train for the next marathon to keeping exercise varied and focusing more on strength. I still enjoy going for a run when I can, but nothing crazy, and I prefer hill sprints while pushing my daughter, Avery in the stroller. She loves it and I get a great workout! I want to show the world how to appreciate their body and feed it real, wholesome food while moving more throughout the day. In doing so, everyone would be healthier, happier, and we'd all live in a better place as a result. I blog mainly about my life as a stay-at-home dad and frequently include reviews, participate in campaigns, and share my thoughts on fitness and nutrition. If you ever have any questions or thoughts to share, please reach out as I'm always open to listening or helping others however possible. That is, when I have free time since Avery is and my wife are the number one priorities!

Happy Birthday to the Best G-Ma Ever!

Today is G-Ma’s (my Mom’s) birthday, and although we can’t celebrate with her today, we will soon enough!

My mom has been through so much and always forges on. She’s always been by my side even when I’m not the best son (sorry about that), and she continues to be there now that we have a +1. I’m referring to our daughter, Avery, just to be clear. 🙂

Mom, G-Ma, thank you for being you and making life so much better. We all hope you have a wonderful birthday and can’t wait to see you to celebrate!

Going Strong: A Babywearing, Reel Mowing Workout during Naptime

One of the best things a parent can do with their baby is wear them as soon as possible after they are born. Dads especially need this to help make up for our non-childbearing bodies. Don’t get me wrong, though, I’m not complaining!!

Besides the numerous benefits babywearing touts when it comes to bonding, it’s also a great way to engage in weight bearing exercise. Once your baby is old enough and has good neck control, you can take your babywearing experience up a notch. Like, for instance, using a reel mower to mow the lawn and wear your baby.

I’ve posted about using the Fiskars reel mower while babywearing in the past, and wanted to give an update now that I can wear Avery on my back. This is way more comfortable than wearing her in the front, and enables me to move a little faster than before.

I recorded this about a month ago, but forgot to post until now. Since we’re getting over a long weekend with a very cranky, teething baby, I lack the ability to write a lot for Monday. So, in place of a wordy post, I give you a video of how to make the most of your time and get a good workout while mowing the lawn and have your baby napping.

By the way, I have no clue how she actually sleeps as I run back and forth across the lawn, but then sit and scream in a peaceful, dark room with a comfy crib. #BabiesAreThe8thWorldWonder

If you are lucky enough to have your baby actually napping in their nursery, then you can enjoy mowing the lawn HIIT style!

Being active with kids of all ages is extremely important to their overall health and wellness. When we lead by example, our children want to do as we do (usually), and even when they’re only months old, they are absorbing everything. The same applies to making healthy food choices and avoiding fast food that contributes nothing nutritious.

I know I’ve said it all before and will continue saying it often because the health of our families should always be top priority. Every trip I make to the grocery store, I see so many parents filling their carts with packaged junk that either their kids begged for or that is just a convenient option.

Sorry for the rant, I need to dedicate a full post to my thoughts on this, but it would be long! Maybe a series?

Going Healthy: Two-Layer Chocolate Microwave Cake

Parents hardly get to have their cake and eat it too; the kids always eat it before you get a chance!

As most of you know, I don’t advocate highly processed foods filled with fat and sugar and loaded with chemicals for that perfect look and long shelf life. Nope, if you want a treat, I feel you should learn to make it for yourself.

Convenience is one of the major factors in the World’s obesity issue, but when you only make things for yourself, over-consumption usually is not a problem.

This is also a great way to lead by example for children. Seeing mom and dad create their own (still healthy) treats will hopefully encourage them to do the same. I’m hopeful that Avery’s interest will grow as she grows and we can start creating tasty, healthy, treats in the kitchen. But first, she needs to walk, talk, and probably eat more solid foods.

Anyway, enough with my health talk, for now. I want to share a healthy recipe for a delicious treat you can make in the microwave. Yep, within minutes you can create chocolaty goodness that’s so easy, you and your kids can each have a cake and eat it too!

Microwave Chocolate Protein Layer Cake

Microwave Chocolate Layer Cake

Ingredients for 2 layers:

  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons whole grain flour (I used spelt); sub coconut or another flour to make gluten/grain free
  • 3 tablespoons peanut flour or favorite protein powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 12 drops liquid stevia or 2 packets powder stevia
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons mashed banana, pumpkin puree, or applesauce
  • 1/4 cup milk of choice (I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk)
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • Optional:  2 tablespoons Greek yogurt icing (*See instructions below)
  • Optional #2: Add a pinch of cayenne for a sweet and spicy chocolate treat.

Directions:

Combine dry ingredients and mix very, very well. Add liquid, stir, then transfer to a small dish coated with non-stick spray. I used a mini quiche ceramic dish (as shown below) for even cooking and layering.

 

Microwave 45 seconds; you may need to do a few more runs in 9 second increments to make sure the bottom is cooked enough. Be sure to allow it to cool before trying to remove it. Repeat for second layer.

Cover the first cake with frosting (if using), set the second layer on top, and then cover with more frosting. Now make it all go away by eating; sharing is optional and not recommended.

*For the Greek yogurt frosting/icing/dip that’s good all on its own:

  • 2 cups of plain, Greek yogurt and mix in one of the following:
  • 1/2 cup peanut flour for peanut butter icing
  • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder (preferably stevia sweetened) and 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chocolate protein powder (preferably stevia sweetened) or unsweetened cocoa powder and 6 drops regular or chocolate liquid stevia
  • 1 very ripe mashed banana and 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ginger and nutmeg, and 1/4 tsp cloves

The taste can be deceiving as you’ll think there’s no way it’s healthy, but really it’s perfect as a dessert or breakfast. Plus, since it can be made in minutes, it won’t take too long to cook one or more before you head out for the day. Or stay in since its Sunday!
