I'm an ex-mutual fund accountant who left the cubicle world to be a stay-at-home dad to my beautiful little girl, Avery, who entered our life on 11/15/13 and handsome little boy, Wes, who joined our family on 11/19/17. Also happily married to my wife, Kelley, as of 8/17/07. Sorry ladies... :) Fitness and nutrition is of the utmost importance in our family and we strive to reflect this in our daily life. I always prepare our meals at home and only go out if it's a special occasion, and even then I tend to not get much. Food should be fun and a joy to eat, not something quickly consumed from a fast food chain or scarf down before the next meeting. I have come from strictly logging high miles to train for the next marathon to keeping exercise varied and focusing more on strength. I still enjoy going for a run when I can, but nothing crazy, and I prefer hill sprints while pushing my daughter, Avery in the stroller. She loves it and I get a great workout! I want to show the world how to appreciate their body and feed it real, wholesome food while moving more throughout the day. In doing so, everyone would be healthier, happier, and we'd all live in a better place as a result. I blog mainly about my life as a stay-at-home dad and frequently include reviews, participate in campaigns, and share my thoughts on fitness and nutrition. If you ever have any questions or thoughts to share, please reach out as I'm always open to listening or helping others however possible. That is, when I have free time since Avery is and my wife are the number one priorities!

Birthday Brunch at Brewed

My little brother, Uncle Preston, and I took our Mom, G-Ma, out for a birthday brunch at Brewed last weekend. She’s been celebrating the big 6-0 for a couple weeks now, starting when my Aunt Tammy, Uncle Paul, and Grandma came down from PA.

But there’s nothing like a little quality time with her two grown boys to top off her birthday fun, right? Preston and I planned to meet at Brewed with him bringing mom there and me meeting them without her knowing. I contacted the place earlier and their GM, Chris, kindly responded saying they’d help make our little outing special.

I arrived before mom and Preston, and although there was a long wait, they had a room cut off from all the noise just for us.

Our Table at Brewed for Mom's 60th

This place is small but extremely popular. And for good reason, the serve top notch local fare and, as the name implies, delicious brews in form of both coffee and beer. Being brunch, I could’ve gone either route, but as I’ve stated before, I choose coffee over beer any day. I went with a cold brew that they have kegged from a place in Oregon and it did not disappoint!

Cold Brew Coffee from Brewed

The equivalent of 3 cups of coffee and served in a Belgian style beer glass made me a happy diner! I also had to pee a lot. I never thought of coffee being in a keg, but definitely need to look into this for a home setup!

When my mom and Preston arrived, I waved them down and we were immediately waited on by a kind waitress. She even took pictures of us on both of our phones.

Mom tasted some of my coffee and ordered some for herself. Preston thought about it, hesitated, and then just went with water despite my advice to “just get some!” Plus, he had to go into work right after, so coffee would only help increase his productivity. Well, and bathroom trips.

Our food came without delay and we all enjoyed what we ordered. As usual, I made special requests including not cooking the omelette in oil and giving me raw veggies instead of toast. It took them a while since I guess not many people ask for this, but all was right in the end and not once did the waitstaff act annoyed at my requests.

Excellent service and willingness to accommodate my special requests (usually just to do less than normal) are all I need to place a restaurant on my favorites list. As of now, that’s a short list, but Brewed is one of them!

After our meals, they surprised us by offering some of their espresso ice cream. My mom and I quickly declined the ice cream but said espresso would be wonderful. After our waitress left, Preston said he actually wanted the ice cream. Oops, sorry, bud, I spoke for all of us! But, he did get to try espresso for the first time in his life and……he wasn’t a big fan. It’s an acquired taste for sure, and I’m glad he at least finished it.

The staff at Brewed had something special for my mom, though…..

How cool is that? A cappuccino with a little cream artwork! We all had a sip and Preston definitely liked that much better. Maybe we’ll have birthday brunch at Brewed for your 24th, Preston. 😉

We sat around a talked a while as I downed a couple coffee refills and then they had to get on their way so Uncle P could go to work. I’m extremely grateful to everyone at Brewed for their great service and quality food. They even comped my mom’s meal and coffee for her birthday! Thanks, Brewed!!!

Spending time with just my mom and brother is rare, and hopefully we’ll find a time to do it again soon. I love our little family, and it’s always fun to reminisce back to when we all lived under the same roof. I love you, Mom and Preston!

Feeling good about our dining service and fortunate they took good care of us, I figured I’d try and continue the good vibes in the area. Kelley was making spaghetti that night and she has a special sauce she makes. It’s rich with flavor with a vibrant red that screams “Eat me!” Seriously, I heard it myself!

Part of what makes the sauce so tasty is her use of lots and lots of garlic, and I needed to bring some home. Not wanting to go to the store, I ventured to another local eatery called Spiral Diner. It’s a unique diner that serves all organic vegan food that even meat lovers enjoy, me included. I popped in, said I don’t need to be seated, but asked if they had any garlic I could buy.

The hostess kindly slipped away to the kitchen and came back with 8 cloves! I asked how much and she said not to worry about it. Score, the good vibes were swarming that day!

I proudly returned home where my wife used all of the cloves for this excellent sauce that quickly found its way to all of our bellies a couple hours later.

Fresh basil from our garden really made it pop! Yum!

We’re getting ready to take Avery on her first flight ever this weekend when we go to Colorado to see Nana and Papa. I’m getting more nervous about how the flight will go every day, so any pointers are well-received. Don’t expect a lot of posts for a while as we try and figure out what all to pack. Too bad the house is not an option…..

How do you feel about Brunch? Better than breakfast and/or lunch, or not a fan?

Do you have a special meal you or your significant other makes?

Flying with babies/toddlers/kids…….is it ever easy?

Diaper Blowouts are Crappy

Pun very much intended here! Diaper blowouts are indeed crappy both figuratively and literally. Anyone who claims otherwise is either A) some weirdo who loves poop or B) in the business of blocking blowouts. Like, for instance, this appropriately named Blowout Blocker Diaper Extension.

Butt (ha ha, get it?), Avery doesn’t have her poop shoot up her back, it’s escaping from the seams around her legs. We use cloth diapers, and I’m starting to wonder if the elastic is just losing it’s strength or Avery’s crap is just getting more powerful.

Going Mom and I are positive it’s a combination of the two. Probably doesn’t help when they are on the runny side. Am I getting too detailed? No? Okay, I’ll keep going then. Just be glad I don’t have pictures to share! 🙂

On Wednesday morning, I walked in on Avery rolling around her crib with poop all over the sheets…….and her……and then me. A quick bath, lots of wiping, spraying the diaper forever, a change of clothes, and load of laundry later and we were good again.

The morning carried on as usual; she threw her green smoothie on the floor several times and we had a lot of standoffs. I even brought her to the bounce house since I had to go to Costco which is nearby. I was sure the bounce house would keep us on good terms, but Mickey Mouse was there and she DID NOT like that giant cheese lover!

Once home, we had lunch, ran around the house, and even read an instruction manual.

Then it was nap time.

But I just got to the French version of the instructions!
But I just got to the French version of the instructions!

Just over an hour later (yeah, she doesn’t give us much for naps these days), I walk into her room and am overwhelmed with deja vu. There she is, rolling around her crib with crap…..everywhere…..again!

Same lengthy routine as last time and we were good once again. Her sheets are pink, but at this rate they’ll be washed out white in no time!

The next day, Thursday, I cautiously walked into her room prepared for another blowout, and not the fun, party variety, but was pleased to see a clean Avery and bed. But there was no poop, which means she’s a ticking time bomb. This girl has crapped 5 times in a day, so we never feel safe.

Sure enough, right after changing her, she took one drink of her morning smoothie and that got things moving. Still no blowout, and she even came to me with her guilty “I pooped” face.

Changed and good to go once more, we finished our NuttZo and banana breakfast before getting ready for the morning walk. As I was cleaning up in the kitchen, Avery ran off to the couch to jump around, her current favorite activity despite my pleas to be careful. Shortly thereafter, she came back to me with her arms extended to pick her up to which I obliged because, parenting.

Damn parenting, I should’ve known she was too quite for her own good. I look down and have a nice plop of poo on my shirt and see it oozing out the side of her legs. Crap, I thought (yeah yeah, literally and figuratively again), the couch! Sure enough, she tagged the couch with her crap. My patience gets tested mostly every day, but this felt like the final exam…..or at least mid-terms.

Same cleaning routine again, including all of couch cushion covers and all of us getting stripped down. I think Avery enjoyed my frantic state, but seemed unsure of her wild post-shower hair.

I was trying to cook that night’s dinner before the episode, so I went back to finish while handing Avery a few fresh green beans to snack on. This helps to keep her from standing on my feet and pointing at my butt and then saying “butt”.

The girl has yet to understand chewing her food, so this resulted in her gagging on a tiny green bean. A big cough and a two gags later, and viola, I have a very viscous vomit on my feet. Can you even call that silver lining since it wasn’t a blowout?

I took Avery to clean her and my feet and then shut her in the playroom where I setup our tent which is obviously a little too big for indoors….

DSC_1426

….just so I could clean the floor without her going to wipe everything around with her hands like I know would and has happened.

Friday was a blowout-free day, but her morning diaper was so overloaded with poo that she leaked all over her sheets. Washed out white, I tell ya, those sheets won’t be pink much longer!

What a week! Who knows what the weekend holds (or doesn’t for that matter), but I guess only time will tell. Wish us luck!

How often, if ever, do you experience blowouts with your little ones?

Any tips you want to share for cloth diapers in order to prevent more blowouts?

Smartphone Photo Dump: Looking Back a Year

I was looking through pictures on my phone the other day, and WOW, there’s so many things I forgot about! As new parents, it’s mostly Avery pics along with one date night worked in there, but thought it would be neat to do a photo dump from my phone a year ago.

Avery has changed so much (I guess teeth really make a difference), and it’s amazing just how much happens over the course of a year. Well, Uncle Preston not knowing how to hold a kid hasn’t changed…

This was one of the first times I wore Avery on my back in our Onya Baby NexStep. Notice the excitement on her face. Or maybe that’s her getting tired of my selfies.

We love a sleeping baby. Bonus points when you can get this close with the lights on to snap a pic and they stay asleep!

Hey, it’s a date night! We went to a BYOB paint class while G-Ma watched Avery. Good times with my wife!

For some reason, Kelley’s jellyfish got to stay out, but mine had to go in the closet. I don’t get it.

More sleeping. We just wanted to go a cuddle with her, but would never dare do such a thing!

This is a sight we’ll never see again. Now she’s always standing and pointing out our shirt, shorts/pants, and butt. Notice how I kept it safe with the oven on in the background.

C’mon, I know all parents love the sight of their sleeping kid(s). Never gets old!

Now she’s excited about the Onya, after I took it off. This changed and she still loves riding on my back to get a better view of everything around.

This is marks the beginning of her sharing the love of Zevia with Mommy and Daddy.

No, I wasn’t auditioning to be Bane in the next Batman movie. This is an elevation training mask I just got and decided to go for a leisurely stroll with Avery in the Onya Outback. If a baby can get embarrassed, she definitely was that day.

Hmmm, funny, this is how a lot of our meals still look today…

Before the need for a gate in the garage while working out, this jumper did just fine. I’m sure with all the jumping she did, it helped develop that leg strength for her awesome moves she does now.

Maybe I’ll start making this an end of the month thing  where I share pics on my phone from that month a year ago. Hope you enjoyed the past pics, and keep a lookout at the end of August!

Go back a year ago on your phone and see if there’s anything you find that you forgot about.

Find anything cool/interesting?
