Commitment Issue and What I’m Doing About It

Don’t we all have at least one commitment issue? Whether they’re something big like getting married, or small like using the exact same bowl for dinner each day, I’m sure you’ve got’em.

Luckily, marriage was never an issue for me, and I have no doubt about my sacred bond to be with my wife till death do us part. But, using the same bowl and spoon is one thing I actually struggle with. I’m just so partial to the dimensions and don’t know how to eat with anything else.

But that’s not the issue I’m writing about today. No, this is something I’ve been annoying Going Mom with for years. It’s my goal to gain strength/weight.

The goal sounds simple enough, but is actually quite complex in my mind. All the into part of my high school life, I was a heavy boy and hated how I looked. I was never obese or anything, but if I continued on the path I was on, that’s how I’d end up. Over the years I educated myself on what’s healthy and got into running. Eventually, I was a full blown long distance runner who could easily go out and run 12 miles without giving it a second thought.

Running was cool, and took a lot of dedication in training and nutrition, but after several years of marathons and running for distance, my strength was lacking. I’ve told this story many times before, so I’ll keep it short…..er.

I want to be a strong dad for Avery and for my own well-being. There will always be a place in my heart for long distance running, but for now I have to try and focus on building mass, which means lay off the running! Not completely, I’ll still run a little to get my “fix”, but mostly sprints and maybe one longer run on the weekends.

Getting stronger means lifting heavy and eating more to provide fuel for muscles to grow. Without a surplus of nutrient-dense calories, your body has nothing to work with to grow. I’ve been lifting for a few years now and know the moves, but not eating enough is what keeps me from attaining my said goal; gain strength/weight.

I could go on forever getting more and more in depth on the subject, but the bottom line is find a strength training program, stick with it, and eat. That doesn’t mean scarfing down pizza and burgers, I’ll still make my own meals, just means I need to eat a lot more of it. Nutrient dense foods like peanut butter, or even better, NuttZo, will be a big help here. And then, for my purposes, I need to ease up on how active I am each day. Something most of the world actually needs to do more of, I should do a little less.

If you want to talk with me more on this topic, please comment below or e-mail me at RCrown2@aol.com and we’ll talk. For now, I am putting it out there that one of my goals, starting this June, is to gain weight in the form of mostly muscle over the next year and reassess from there. I’m currently 5’10 and 160 lbs; my goal is to get to 175 lbs, so we’ll see how well I do.

Why June? Well, I don’t think anyone should wait for the New Year to start any of their goals, for one, but it’s because I am turning 31 on the 8th and I want to be a stronger, happier husband/father by 32. Sorry to my wife, who’s heard me say this since before I was even 30, but hopefully by writing it out on my blog, I’ll have something else to hold me accountable.

I never had a problem with discipline or motivation to work out, but when it comes to eating more than I’m used to, and when it’s mostly whole foods, it’s not easy. I fear just gaining pure fat, I’ll admit it, even though I know the basic science behind how our bodies work, and that wouldn’t happen as long as I train smart.

By the end of June, I hope to share my weekly training schedule with the thought that it will keep me from being sidetracked. I’m lucky to have such a wonderful daughter who is usually happy to train with me in the garage, so I should have no excuses.

Stay tuned for what else is happening this month and why you should care. Hint: it’s for a good cause and I’m going to ask for generous donations! 🙂

Do you struggle with certain commitments?

Do you have a current training plan to gain or lose weight? Despite my own issues, I am actually full of advice I’m happy to share if you ask.

2 Celebrations and I Ran Anyway

I know what you’re thinking. After my butt issue just a few days ago, why in the world did I run?! I’ll tell you, but first let’s talk about the two celebrations on Saturday.

This past weekend, one of our neighbors had a birthday party for their one year old girl, Seneca. Avery and Seneca are exactly 6 months apart, and I expect they’ll become good friends as they grow up together. I never got any pictures of the two together, or the birthday girl at all, but Avery had a great time with Mommy in the bounce house at the party.

Two beauties smiling bright! Avery was a little shy at first, but she warmed up quickly and even played with her peers. From the looks of it, she’s really good at sharing with one of the neighborhood boys, Connor.

“Sharing”, it’s a loosely defined term, right? But “Cuddles”, now that’s fairly straight-forward, and she’s happy to give them when Mommy or Daddy (and sometimes strangers, yikes!) asks.

We had a great time at the party and made it back home for a family walk and then nap time before heading back out again. We were meeting Kelley’s family as well as my mom and her boyfriend at a restaurant for a belated Mother’s Day celebration and it was great to see everyone.

When we meet up with family, Avery just makes her rounds being held and we get a little “freedom” for half an hour as others get their cute kid fix. It’s a win-win for everyone! We all had a good time talking with each other and Avery was very well-behaved……almost too well.

Before we knew it, we were on our way back home to get Avery to bed and wind down the night with 3 Walking Dead Season 5 episodes. Thank you, internet!

The half-marathon I talked so much about that was cancelled from severe weather last weekend (so I rowed 13.1 instead), was rescheduled for yesterday, the 17th. The venue changed twice from the original location and we had already checked out of even considering trying to go after my ER visit.

“Butt” (ha ha, get it?), I found myself having trouble sleeping and woke up earlier than usual on Sunday morning. This usually means I make my grocery shopping rounds early and be done with it, but this time, I had another perfect idea instead. Go to the race and then to the store!

True, I was specifically told not to run, and I’m still hurting a little down there, but when I pay for something it gets under my skin when I just give it up. That something would be the nice technical shirts and finisher’s medal you get, as well as a surprise Mother’s Day gift the event organizer mentioned. So I told Kelley, as she went to nurse Avery back asleep, I was leaving for the store and would be back soon.

I didn’t officially decide to drive to the race until I got in my car, then I figured why not, and thought it would be cool to bring back the Mother’s Day surprise gift for Kelley. Husband bonus points for me! I arrived right after the race started, so I gave the coordinators my spiel and they happily gave me a shirt for both my wife and I and agreed to give a Mother’s Day gift if I finished the race.

So I raced. But not the half-marathon, just the 5k, and I walked most of it, which was very muddy from the never-ending rain.

Muddy 5k Path

The nice thing about walking is you get to see more and take in the nice scenery. For example this really long worm along with dozens of his friends were on the entire course.

Yeah, so it wasn’t that great of scenery. I ended up running the last mile, but I was sorry for that later….stupid butt. At least it looked like I saw some action with a little mud splashed up my leg.

I didn’t wait around for my first place trophy (joke), just took a banana, which happened to be attached to several bananas…

…got my finisher’s medal….

Mother's Day Run Medal…and Kelley’s Mother’s Day gift.

Mother's Day Run Fuel BeltA freakin Fuel Belt. They are nice, but I was thinking something more motherly. But what could I expect from a runners club? I actually think it will be great when out all day with Avery since it has a hydration pack and some storage.

Overall great weekend and I’m happy to say my ass is hurting less! I go in for check-up (no jokes) on Tuesday, so hopefully I have more good news to report then!

Do you feel like you have to get your money’s worth at events you sign up for?

Ever walk a race before? That was a first for me and it felt weird, but not that bad.

5 Turtles Free and Uncle P Turns 23

Over the course of April, Avery and I have rescued 5 turtles from meeting their demise by something even their tough shells can’t withstand; cars. Texas has been fortunate enough to have lots and lots of rain so far, but this tends to bring more wildlife into the busy streets as they try to cross over to another safe-haven.

We’ve rescued both baby and fully grown terrapins and felt great knowing their life is at least prolonged just a little longer. Sadly, we also found many we couldn’t get to in time as they already met with their round rubber assassins.

My heart sinks a little each time I see one of those tiny turtles flat on the road. Unlike their bigger counterparts, they look like nothing more than a small stone to drivers. But, how about we focus on what we can control, like moving the living turtles off of the road.

I shared all but one turtle rescue on Instagram, but want to bring them all together in one post on my blog. But, before we go through each “saving”, I need to say something….

Happy 23rd Birthday Preston!

(aka Brother/Uncle P)

Yep, today, May 1st, is my little bro’s birthday. I don’t get to hang out with him that much, but need to have another night where we go enjoy a few craft beers. Avery also doesn’t get to see him as much as since the last picture we have is from Christmas.

We’ve seen him more recently than that, but never took a picture. Look at how much Avery has changed in just a few months, yikes!!

Anyway, Preston, if you’re reading this (I’ll also call you since that would be the brotherly thing to do), lets find a time to meet up so I can buy you a round of beers for your birthday, mmmmmmkay?

What better way to commemorate Uncle P’s birthday than to go over the turtles we’ve rescued last month? After all, his gamer tag/name on Halo, which we used to play ALL the time, was Turtle. It only makes sense, right?

1. The first one was a baby water turtle (actually, all of these are water turtles) that we found on our afternoon walk (again, all of these were found on one of our daily walks). This guy stayed with us for about a week before I realized I had no idea why I was keeping it, so back to the wild next to a serene creek bed he went.

“Lyle Leo” was supposed to be “Little Leo”, for Ninja Turtles, but stupid auto-correct wins again! Maybe that’s why he paused before heading off to find his family.

2 & 3. Then we found a mommy or daddy turtle with its little one. They were next to the curb, but trying to get to the other side of the road. Abby stood guard as I helped them cross.

4. This was a quickie rescue mission for another baby turtle. I saw, I picked up, I carried to a nearby lake, I forgot to take a picture. Instead, here’s an old pic of our escapee pet box turtle, Tash, from a year ago. This is when we first introduced Avery to my favorite creatures and G-Ma was there to help.

5. And the last one, saved just this past Wednesday, was the biggest turtle I’ve seen in our neighborhood to date! I had to put the mean snapper in a box and it literally weighed about 10 – 12 pounds!

I even caught video of the release. This is not the kind of turtle you want to pet. Avery walked right up to it and I had to grab her fast just as he snapped. Phew, close call!

Who knows what May will bring in terms of animal rescues? But one thing’s for sure, we’ll be there, walking and looking to help out whenever possible!

Do you encounter certain wildlife in your area often?

Do you or have you ever had to rescue an animal around your neighborhood or anywhere else?
