Toddler Talk: Nipples and Swimming

Our daughter is at the age where her toddler talk has us cracking up. constantly. I’m upset I didn’t start writing some of our conversations down earlier. Well, I did mention how well-versed she is with human anatomy already, but now it’s time to document some good ones in a post.

She’s giving Going Mom and I enough material to make several posts per day, but for now, I’ll stick to just once a week of something good. Maybe I’ll include more than once conversation on some, but today it’s just one quick discussion I had with Avery. And yes, it has to do with both nipples and swimming.

For context, I was in a hurry trying to make good on my promise that we’d go to the pool if she behaved at the store. Well, she behaved, but it was getting close to lunch before nap time. After going potty (her, not me), the conversation went like this…

Me: Okay, good job, Avery, now lets wash our hands and get ready for a quick swim.

Avery: Ooooo, I both pee and poop!

Me: Wow, you did, good job dear! Do you want to flush?

Avery: Yes!! <—- it’s like a reward for her to get to flush

Me: *toilet flushing* Okay, now we need to wash our hands.

Avery and Me: Singing Itsy Bitsy Spider as we wash.

Me: Now, since this will be a quick swim, I’m not going to put your swim shirt on, okay? You can just be shirtless like daddy! <—-the thing is kinda of tight and she cries every time I work it over her head, so just not worth the trouble for 10 minutes of swimming.

Avery: Yes. We can have nipples!

Me: *laughing* Yes, dear, we can have nipples.

Avery: Daddy has hairy nipples.

Me: True, they are kind of hairy….

I went on to explain how guys usually have hair on the chest and belly. She said something about standing on her froggy stool and then we went for a quick swim. The result?

Swimming by herself_smiles

Yeah, she’s loving it. No one else is going to our neighborhood pool since it’s been cloudy outside and fairly cold, so we get it to ourselves every visit so far. She’s already swimming by herself with her floaties and you can tell how proud she is for the feat.

A Conversation With My Baby

This is a post from 2 years ago when Avery was still a baby. The conversation may or may not of actually happened. 🙂

Me: Hey, Avery!

Avery: Yes?

Me: Want to know something pretty cool?

Avery: I’m listening….

Me: Well, for one thing, you’re an outrageously cute baby and I love you!

Avery: Ahh, get out, you’re just saying that so I’ll finish that bottle without putting up a fight.

Me: Nope, it’s true, you’re a cutie. But, if you wouldn’t mind helping daddy out, it would be much appreciated if you just took the bottle without jerking your head every 30 seconds; please? Anyway, did you know we’re going somewhere tomorrow?

Avery: It’s not the doctor’s office, is it?

Me: Ha ha, nope, that will be later this month though.

Avery: Whaaaaaaa! I don’t wanna go!

Me: Calm down dear, you have a nice doctor and we’ll be there for you the whole time, I promise.

Avery: Okay, only if you’re there the whole time. And no funny stuff! Or else I won’t cooperate for your next baby workout video, which is pretty silly if you ask me.

Me: Thanks for understanding, and I do appreciate your cooperation at all times. So, tomorrow we are going to G-ma’s house. Remember, she watched you last weekend when mommy and daddy went to the Imagine Dragons concert. The last time you were there you were only 5 weeks old, and now you’re 15 weeks! You’re growing so fast and just keep getting cuter, I swear.

Avery: Oh, dad, you’re crazy! I can’t wait to see G-ma again, we had a great time together last weekend! Plus, she doesn’t swaddle me so tight where I can’t move my hands to my mouth to suck them.

Me: Well, I’m glad you’re excited and I’m sure we’ll have a great time. Just remember, we can’t bring your crib, so you’ll have to sleep in your bassinet for the first time. Will you promise to be good while we visit?

Avery: I’m sorry, what? I wasn’t paying attention.

Me: I said we’re going to G-ma’s and I asked if you promise to be a good baby while we’re there. And always, for that matter….

Avery: Ha ha, I know, I heard you the first time! Yes, I’ll be good, but I can’t make any promises about the bassinet.

Me: Okay, that’s good enough, I’ll just depend on my super swaddle powers to keep you content and sleeping well. I guess it’s time to work on this bottle now. How about giving your dad a break and just finishing it like a growing baby should? If you do, we can play airplane and make clicky noises with our tongue.

Avery: Okay, it’s a deal daddy!

Me: Thanks, dear, mommy and daddy love you!

Avery: Awwww, and I love the both of you.

Does anyone else ever make up conversations with their babies? I feel like I might be going crazy, but then again, maybe I already was…

Typical Conversations With Our Toddler

At almost 22 months old (seriously, time, just stop for a change), our toddler daughter seems to increase her vocabulary every day. Not that it’s a big surprise with how much time we spend reading to her as well as her reading by herself.

Reading usually occurs sans animals, but Nana’s dog was adamant about sticking around for the ending.

I figured I would share some of the typical conversations we have with Avery at this stage in her toddler career. Obviously, they are less like conversations and more like us asking a lot of different questions with one syllable, hard to distinguish answers. Or just going through asking what noise *insert animal* makes.

When she’s getting fussy and we can’t figure out why or it’s just because she wants us to give her something she can’t have, we’ll bust out with the animal sound questions…

Us: What does the kitty say?
Avery: La (sometimes it’s more of a meow, but not quite yet)
Us: What does the owl say?
Avery: Who-who
Us: Ummm, what does the dog say?
Avery: ruff
Us: How about the pig?
Avery: very soft snorting noise I’m not sure how to spell out
Avery: getting fussy again
Us: Uhhh……what does the bear say?
Avery: rooaarrrr <—-cutest thing ever!

Just recently, when we’re changing her and just took off her pajamas, she gets upset if she’s not wearing a shirt.

Avery: Shit, shit, shit
Us: What?
Avery: *pointing at our shirt* Shit!
Us: Oh, you want a shirt?
Avery: Yesshh
Us: Okay, what color do you want?
Avery: Pink (this was the first color she could say, so it’s always her first color question response)
Us: Would you like this green one with the Ninja Turtles?
Avery: Yesshh
Us: We’ll put it on right after changing your diaper. What color diaper do you want?
Avery: Pink
Us: How about this one, what color is it?
Avery: Pink………bllluuueee
Us: Yes, good job dear! You’re so smart!
Avery: I smaahht

And then, quite often, there are times where it’s just a drawn out guessing game. She’s fussy and only getting worse by the second…

Avery: Uh, ugh, ugh….bla
Us: What do you want sweetie?
Avery: bla baaa, laa
Us: I don’t understand what that is, dear. Do you want another book?
Avery: nnnn, bla bla baaa
Us: Still don’t know, does something hurt?
Avery: *reaching up but not really towards anything* blaaa laaa
Us: *finally realizing…we think* Oh, you want water?
Avery: Yesshhhhh

So apparently “W’s” are hard to pronounce right now. No worries, we have plenty of time to learn. Since a toddler is usually around the ages of one and three, I see follow-up posts in our future, and maybe by then she’ll at least have “water” down.

There are plenty of other “conversations” we have with Avery in a day, but these seem to be the most frequent so far. But with a constantly growing list of words she can say, including high chair, bear, book, swing, slide, mow, squats, shorts, mom, glasses, phone, trash, pig, squash, and most of the primary colors, our talks are sure to get more interesting. Oh yeah, she started saying No, which is already proving to be a problem. Apparently for the both of us….
