Colorado Family Vacation Day 2.2: Hiking Addiction

When in Colorado, I have to get out on a trail at least once a day. The area is too beautiful not to take advantage and get outdoors in the wilderness.

Lucky for me, Going Mom feels the same way. The other half of our second day in Colorado, after returning from the Vail Farmers’ Market, we took off to the trails in Nana and Papa’s mountainous neighborhood. I’m forever grateful to Nana, Papa, and Cousin Ashlee for happily keeping Avery and playing with her while my wife and I enjoyed several outings alone.

Kelley and I walked the half mile from the house to get to the trail head and set off taking one of two directions presented to us. When I went alone the day before, I took the opposite path we chose this day just to see what was different. Silly wife, she looked to me for direction as she took awesome photos, so I did the best I could to be act confident that I knew where we were going.

Note to self: Remember this tree…

I look confident, right?

We trekked through the lush plant-life trying to take in the scenery while simultaneously not tripping over the rock-littered path. We failed at that, by the way, and lost count at how many times we stumbled. I think that’s just a part of trail hiking though. Or is it clumsiness?

Kelley was in awe of the trees, and took many pictures trying to capture their wonder….

…..while I just scalee their trunks.

Getting down was a little painful though. I still have long scratches on my belly, shins, and all the way down my left calf from hugging the trunk and sliding to get down.

Leg Scratch From Tree Climb

That pic is from the next day. Don’t worry, the trees and I quickly made up since I never should’ve climbed on them in the first place.

Of course, I had to be “cool” and throw one of their fallen compadres. Well, after posing long enough for Kelley to snap a pic of me and all of my coolness.

DSC_1916

We were having fun hiking through the varied terrain and checking everything out, but knew we couldn’t go on forever since we did have a kid to get back to. So naturally, we kept going and even stopped a stream to pose for pictures.

DSC_1855

The flowing water was so clear and probably better to drink than most city water. So I did….

DSC_1851

I even talked Kelley into taking a sip from the icy stream. We later read a warning sign saying only to drink water from purified sources. Oops! Well, we’re still standing today, so I guess that was a purified source.

As it got later, I urged us to push on just a little further. Kelley protested a little, but agreed to continue along the path. We hit a steep incline that I saw as a challenge to run to the top. I wanted to put my Soft Star Shoes Dash RunAmoc’s with a trail sole to the test anyway.

DSC_1897

The shoes were already performing great across all types of terrain, and they never let me down as I went up.

DSC_1912

I’ve been wearing these shoes for a while and use them when lifting in the garage, running outside, and now, hiking outdoors. The perfect for any activity!

I tried to keep quiet and just continue our hike, but Going Mom finally talked some sense into me to turn around and get back to the family. I’ll admit, when it comes to being on the trail, it’s hard to stop. You tell yourself just a little more, but a little more turns into another hour, and then another hour…..much like an addiction to drugs, only much healthier. That is, unless you get eaten by a bear or something….

Speaking of eating, we saw many mushrooms I was tempted to try, but thought better of it since I have no clue about wild mushrooms when they’re actually in the wild. But man, these little guys emerging from a hole in the ground were begging me to try.

Eat us!
Eat us!

But I passed on the delectable fungi and started making the way back with Kelley. Our backtracking journey was obviously faster than when we went out, so figured we would stop another hiker to ask to take our picture. The hiker, originally from Dallas, was happy to oblige and did a good job at pushing that shiny silver button.

She even told us about a 4 mile loop we could hike which was part of the trail we were on. The wheels in my head were already turning, and Kelley knew we’d be returning to complete the loop very soon.

By soon, I mean the next day, after our 2.5 mile walk along the Blue River for coffee at Red Buffalo Cafe. But that completes day two of our vacation. Making the 4 mile hike had Kelley feeling lost for a while, I swear, I knew where I was going the whole time. 🙂

Do you love hiking?

Ever feel like you can’t turn around and have to keep progressing forward on the trail?

Have you tried a wild mushroom not in stores before?

Does Your Toddler Need A Weight Lifting Rest Week?

Only 20 months old and Avery has plenty of weight lifting experience under her belt. Literally….

DSC_1773

She is a master with the kettlebell, does plenty of squats, and even acts as our personal trainer sometimes. I follow a 4 day per week lifting routine and normally do some form of HIIT on my “off” days, and Avery is there with me, ready to workout too.

DSC_1761

Well, sometimes. She also enjoys reading, which is perfectly fine. Just recently she figured out how to loop my weight belt and now she must wear it at all times. She’s a little reluctant to hand it over when I have my own heavy lifting to do, but as long as I promise to give it right back, she’ll allow me to use it. Because she has heavy lifting reading to do too.

DSC_0114

As a bonafide exercise addict myself, I can tell when things are getting too excessive. I’m still struggling with the whole less is more ideology when it comes to gaining strength even though I know it’s true. The last thing I want is for Avery to develop the same tendency to need to workout out all the time, so it’s good for both of us that we’re going on vacation soon.

I can tell Avery is already a tad obsessive when it comes to working out just from her constant desire to have the belt on just in case she needs to pull a couple sets of doubles on deadlift or push for a new 5 rep max on back squat. Or maybe just push the boundaries of all things cute!

Whatever the case, I knew a break from it all was imminent. First she started having trouble with getting her belt on.

DSC_1762

Then her interest in other activities, like reading, began to wane.

Read.....or LIFT!!!
Read…..or LIFT!!!

A big indicator was when she started to take frequent rests and appeared lethargic. A classic sign of fatigue.

DSC_1776

But the ultimate sign for a weight lifting rest week came about when she began getting clumsy in her movements and very, very irritable.

DSC_1788

Trikes and belts just don’t mix, but she wouldn’t listen to Daddy.

Luckily, our whole Going Family is getting a rest week in 2 days. My training routine even has a scheduled rest week that fits perfectly for our vacation. Of course, it’ll be active rest as I plan on hiking and kayaking with my wife every day! We’re going to Colorado to stay with Nana and Papa which will be interesting since this is Avery’s first time to be on a plane. Yikes!

That said, I need to get back to perusing Pinterest for clever ways to make the trip as easy as possible. I found this blogger who created a great list for Air Travel Under 2; she says It’s not that bad. We’ll be the judge of that………or, Avery will that is.

Thanks to those of you who left me tips the other day, I’ll be using those for sure! I’m counting on her love of popcorn to make it a great snack to keep her occupied, one kernel at a time. I’m air-popping a big batch of this Tiny But Mighty organic popcorn to bring along. If you haven’t tried, pick some up and enjoy, it’s delicious! Better get back to it, we still have lots of packing to do!

Are you a fitness fanatic who never gives yourself a break, or the opposite and need more motivation to get going?

Do you find family vacations are more stressful than they should be, or have you had a great experience every time?

A Watered-Down Splash Pad Outing

Hot weather and a toddler too energetic to keep indoors gave me the bright idea of bringing Avery to a nearby splash pad yesterday. It was the same one my wife and I brought her to a few months ago, and I was hoping she’d be more into it this time.

That time, I ran and met my favorite ladies there to play together in the assortment of shooting water structures. We took turns swinging her in the air to go in and out of water streams, but ultimately, she seemed unimpressed with the whole ordeal.

So, what exactly am I supposed to do?

This time, I thought I’d get my workout “fix” in and run the 2+ miles in my Soft Star Shoes again, but also pushing Avery in the stroller. Not surprisingly, the Texas sun and weight of a toddler in a stroller made the run a little more difficult.

By the time we arrived, I was more excited about getting in the water than any of the other kids around. Which, by the way, there were a lot of kids. I saw two daycare vans in the parking lot and would’ve turned right around to go home if I were driving. But, the need to cool down and my determination to see Avery run around having a blast kept me from leaving. I took her out and set her down prepared to watch her run amok.

This place again?
This place again?

This picture look familiar? Pretty much the same spot and stance from her first visit to the pad. My heart started slowly sinking…..or maybe it was just slowing down to normal after running. Either way, her non-action was not the reaction I was hoping for. At least she turned around and smiled for the camera when I asked…

Smiling a splash pad

I tried running through the water obstacles in hopes she would follow suit, but no luck. She did, however, take a few steps and watch the fountains spit shots of water out.

Staring at water

Meanwhile, kids are running all around her screaming and having fun. Except for one boy who ran around and threw water from a bottle on me and then hit another boy in the face with the empty bottle. Yeah, he went to time-out after that.

The first trip with Going Mom was more fun than this. At least I had a beautiful wife to keep me company and help toss Avery around to get her to do something. I lifted her over my head and ran circles and went through a few sprayers which got her to laugh. Then I set her down thinking that might’ve warmed her up and she would be ready to go, but….

And that pretty much sums up our lackluster outing to the splash pad. Guess we’ll stick to bounce houses for a bit longer.

I finally gave up with the splash pad and prepared to run back home. Not surprisingly, Avery never made a fuss about getting back in the stroller and she had a fun time shouting out “car” or “tree” at every car or tree we passed. There were a lot of both.

Feeling unsatisfied with our watered down water fun, I thought it best to stop by our neighborhood pool since we know how much she loves that! I guess no one wanted to come outside at that time, so we had the pool all to ourselves.

We “swam” in the big pool for a bit, and then migrated over to the kiddie pool so she could stand all by herself.

Avery standing in kiddie pool

Kelley and I will ask if she can do high knees in the water and she does it every time. Pretty cute to watch, obviously. I made the mistake of asking if she can do squats in the water, in which she promptly showed she could, but came close to going under. #ParentingFail

After playing around in the kid pool and snapping a selfie with Avery, we were ready to head home. Hey, she smiled!

Despite the uneventful splash pad experience, I still think we had a good time. Maybe I’m just trying to be optimistic, okay, I am being optimistic, but these make for good memories nonetheless. Plus, the pool was our savior for a fun day!

At what age would you expect kids to be into the splash pad?

What’s better, swimming at the pool or a splash pad? Or both?
