Memorial Day Facts + Her Crazy Hair Growth

Today we’re celebrating our third Memorial Day as parents to a precious little girl by doing something totally crazy. And by crazy, I mean staying home and begging my wife to take a break from painting our boring beige walls with something brighter to cut my hair. Oh, I’ll probably mow if it’s not too muddy.

Insane, right?! If you’re a humble homebody like us, it probably sounds quite nice, but if not, we just sound dull and not cool to hang around. It’s okay, I understand.

The banished beige walls are looking much better and vibrant, I must say, and Going Mom gets all of the credit. If you’re reading this, dear wife (and why wouldn’t you?), you’re doing an awesome job!

Despite our lack of an exciting Memorial Day, we are making sure to pay our respects to the soldiers who died while serving our country.

They paid the greatest price which allows us to enjoy an extended weekend to do things like go to the lake,  cook-out with friends and family or even have your spouse cut your hair. The least we can do is make sure we know why we’re celebrating and be mindful of the sacrifices made.

Speaking of haircuts, I was revisiting Memorial Day posts I made the past two years and can’t get over how much Going Daughter has grown, especially her hair. She was 6 months old for her first Memorial Day, and it was around the time we started baby-led weaning.

It was a rough start, but our persistence and determination paid off as she’s a healthy food (albeit, slow) eating kid who loves eating daddy’s homemade fermented cabbage and cucumbers. But that hair was so thin and barely making a presence.

The next year, her hair was coming around and curls were starting to develop on the sides a little.

Now, at two and half years old, that hair knows no restraints as it has turned into a beautiful mess of waves, curls, and, well, freakin’ cuteness!

As you can see, the hairs seems to of brought a new attitude along with it. Mostly fun, but sometimes it brings out the inner demon child we’ve all seen in the past at full force.

It’s scary, but still cute in a way.

With absolutely zero plans of getting scissors anywhere near her hair for a long time, it will be fun to see how much it has grown in another year. Will the curls continue or will everything go straight? When I was her age, I had crazy curls, but now I have none, so we’ll just wait and see.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day, and be sure to take a moment to reflect on why we’re celebrating today.

My Resolution Success and Failure Before the New Year: A Mohawk

Have you ever had or do you currently have a mohawk haircut? It’s something I’ve always wondered how it would look on me, so I decided to attempt cutting my own hair to see what it would look like.

When I went to get my haircut, the hairdresser refused to do it since she figured my wife would hate it (probably true), and now that Going Mom cuts my hair (except this time), she too refuses to grant my haircut wish. Guess the hairdresser has seen this from other married men in the past!

For the New Year, I decided one of my resolutions would be to have a mohawk and finally see how my large head would appear sporting the look of a Native American warrior!

First, take a look at my main motivation for wanting to cut my hair; bedhead.

No, no, wait, let me show you my “El Confidant” look…

20141230_141556

…or lack thereof.

As Avery sat patiently ran all around her gated area throwing everything in site and screaming, I figured now would be the best time to make a first attempt at cutting my hair.

I setup in our living room for Avery to watch and had my cape, vacuum, cardboard box, and shears ready. *Buzzzzzzzzz* And off with my head hair!

20141230_142512

Gaaahhhhh! WTF did I just do?!

20141230_142537

Geeehhhhh, nothing good, that’s what!

20141230_142545

And the most annoying part about my “longer” hair is how it goes over my ears. I still couldn’t manage to get that right!

After getting a big raspberry thumbs down from Avery, I ended my minute of mohawkdom and buzzed it all off.

20141230_144329

Yeah, that’s better. Finally, I got the hair over my ears too!

20141230_144339

Not bad for a novice, huh? Unless you count the mohawk, which I’m not!

And with that, I succeeded and failed at my New Year’s resolution before it even arrived!

Have you ever jumped the gun on a resolution and failed before the new year?

How do you like the haircut?

Nana and Papa’s Visit and Would You Let Your Wife Cut Your Hair?

Seriously, who needs teeth anyway? Can’t we all survive on pureed foods?

We are in full blown teething mode over here, and Avery is constantly reminding us every second…………not kidding.

Poor girl, life is hard.

This past weekend Nana and Papa came over to have dinner at our house. They hadn’t seen Avery since Mother’s Day when we brought her to their house for her 6 month photos.

I’d say she’s changed a little; crawling, “talking”, and sprouting a few teeth.

After everyone ate, Avery provided the entertainment for the evening. She could crawl anywhere (within reason) around the house, but chose to go under the table just to make it difficult to get her. No worries, though, Papa joined her to see what’s so great about her chosen location.

Not sure what is was, but the hung out down there for a while. Eventually, she climbed out and her and Papa had a little peek-a-boo time.

Where is Papa?

DSC_0134

There he is!

She wasn’t buying it. Teething can really “take a bite” out of your sense of humor, huh?

Avery actually enjoyed most of the day, but for some reason she just wouldn’t show smiles for the camera. We really have to work for those smiles now!

After Papa had his Avery fix, Nana could hardly resist scooping Avery in her arms for kisses. I’m going to guess Avery isn’t quite ready to return kisses though…

DSC_0143

Just a wild guess.

We moved outside to our backyard for a bit and Avery practiced standing in the grass as Kelley held her hands.

The air was stagnant and even with the sun starting to set, it was hot, so we migrated back inside. We played with Avery a little longer until Nana and Papa had to head home. It was great seeing them, and I know Avery enjoyed their company, despite her expressionless face in the pictures!

The next day, Sunday, in an effort to “cut” costs, I agreed to have Going Mom cut my hair. We bought a new hair cutting kit for just less than the price of one haircut, so after just one cut, we’d be in the green!

I normally try to wait a month before getting my hair cut, so it was getting pretty messy and growing over my ears.

Here it is from the side: before

DSC_0195

I never fix my hair or do anything with it unless my wife asks me to, which isn’t often thankfully. When I had an office job, just the act of putting something in my hair stressed me out. Yeah, it’s a minor thing, but just what it represented pissed me off.

Anyway, after a few YouTube videos and reading the included instruction manual later, Kelley started her first time attempt to ever cut anyone’s hair. At first, I wasn’t too worried, but as she started laughing and saying “It will get better”, I had an immediate face palm reaction.

DSC_0198

But, in the end, I’m pretty happy with the results. It’s a lot shorter than I usually have it, but definitely makes it easy to wash and there’s no way to style this now!

DSC_0199

It’s taken some getting used to, for both of us, but I’d say it’s growing on me. Ha ha, get it?

DSC_0200

Now I don’t have to wait a month or more before my next hair cut, and hopefully Kelley’s statement, “It will get better” holds true.

So, would you let your spouse/partner cut your hair if they never have before?
