I’ve been against going to a shop for simple car services and all about performing easy DIY car maintenance for years. It saves time, money, and leaves you with a greater sense of satisfaction. Plus, it allows you to connect with your car. Yes, even if it’s a rusty ’88 Cutlass Supreme that rocks more than a boat in high winds, it’s yours, have some pride.

Before we had our daughter, diy car maintenance was easy. Just go buy everything I need, bring it back, and get to work on changing the oil and oil filter, replacing the air filter, checking tire pressure, replacing windshield wipers, etc. But now that she’s almost always by my side, it’s not as simple as just leaving to get what I need. Especially when there’s only so much time in the day to play! Now I know why places that offer simple car maintenance and inspections like the Sacramento smog inspection service are so popular. It’s literally a one-stop shop!

As someone who despises crowded stores and out-of-stock items, I’ve become an avid online shopper over the years and decided to search for my car maintenance necessities online. Knowing Walmart.com has a wide variety of items for all of our daily needs, I searched and quickly found everything needed for easy DIY car maintenance. Even better, they have many Pennzoil products on rollback for a limited time which had me quickly clicking “Add to Cart” to take advantage of the savings.

I added a few more items need for my car and checked out. No lines, no time spent lugging my poor girl around a crowded store, and plenty of money saved. When ordering online, you have the option of products being shipped directly to your home, picking up in-store or curbside assistance. Naturally, I chose shipping right to our home.

A few days later, my order arrived securely packaged. But the secure packaging was no match for my crazy kid little helper.

She tore right through that orange tape to see what could possibly be inside. To our daughter, anything and everything is hers or she repeatedly claims that she wants something without knowing what it is. This is one of those times.

“Oohhhh, it’s…..”

“……a long yellow…stick?”

She wasn’t sure what to make of the wiper blade, but I took the advantage of her interest in the new wiper blade to show her where it belonged on my car and explained its purpose.

The other box had more maintenance goodies including the other wiper blade,  oil filters, and of course the Pennzoil Full Synthetic Premium Motor Oil I order with rollback savings.

With PurePlus™ Technology which converts natural gas into a 99.5% pure base oil, Pennzoil full synthetic premium motor oil offers the best cleanliness and protection in its line-up. If you made the mistake of using lower quality oils in the past, never fear, Pennzoil helps clean out any sludge they left behind. With all of these benefits, it’s no wonder Pennzoil provides better protection from friction than other motor oils.

With the time saved by ordering from Walmart.com, I was able to spend it in the garage performing the easy diy car maintenance tasks with my kid close by lending a helping hand.

Together, we changed the oil and oil filter (be sure to use standard safety precautions and refer to the owner’s manual for your car before changing the oil), check the tire pressure, and replaced the wiper blades. She even helped by reading the instructions.

Not that I really needed them, I knew what I was doing the whole time. 🙂

There are many other DIY car maintenance jobs that anyone can do, but I wanted to keep it short and sweet for our toddler’s introduction to car maintenance. She may not be a baby, but baby steps are still required. Actually, that holds true all the way into adulthood!

To learn more about Pennzoil, follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Afterward, head on over to Walmart.com for rollback savings on Pennzoil products along with a host of other items you need every day, shipped right to your door.

Soft Star Shoes Child Rambler Review: Growing Happy Feet

Soft Star Shoes have become a family favorite in the ‘Going’ household. First, I became a proud ambassador, then I reviewed their RunAmoc Moc3’s, then they sent Avery the awesome pair of Child Ramblers that I’m reviewing today, and I have a review of their Dash RunAmoc shoes coming soon!

All of this, plus Going Mom just received the coolest Mother’s Day gift from the coolest husband ever; a pair of Soft Star Shoes Solstice Sandals. So, yeah, we’re rockin’ the Soft Star life over here and our feet couldn’t be happier!

Soft Star Shoes has a neat design-your-own area for their adult and kids’ shoes, but I went with their Flamingo/Nutmeg color combo since my wife and I liked the colors and figured they’d go with more of the clothes Avery has.

Before they wear shoes, kids have a natural movement pattern and are able to move around freely. Giving feet freedom is important since the early years of a kids’ life is when their body is rapidly changing.

Shoes that allow freedom for feet to grow and develop naturally is of the utmost importance, and that’s exactly what Soft Star Shoes provides. Check out their informative link with healthy footwear tips and research-based info on why the right shoe is so important for your little one.

The Ramblers have a minimal design that allows feet the freedom to move around, are slip-resistant, handcrafted in the USA with high quality materials, and flexible without arch support that forces feet into a “molding”. How flexible, you ask? This flexible…

And their rubber soles allow for play on all types of surfaces, indoor or out, without the need to be concerned about slipping.

The ease of putting them on your child will depend on two big things; their age and the current weather. At Avery’s age, she does everything she can to NOT help you get her dressed, and if it’s hot/humid outside, that only makes it worse.

Thankfully, the elastic ankle closure on these makes it easier to get on and off than most other shoes we’ve tried. Once they’re on, they stay snug but comfortable. She never complained about having them on, even for extended periods. I’d like to think it helps that she looks up to (literally) and wants to wear Soft Star Shoes like her Daddy.

The Ramblers fit her feet quite well with a little room to grow. When she is ready for bigger shoes, Soft Star has plenty of sizing options including baby (0-12 months), child (1-5 years), youth (5-12 years), and adult (12-150 years). The fact that she keeps them on while in her stroller on the way to the playground says a lot, trust me!

When playing, Avery can easily run around and even kick the soccer ball without issue.

The shoes we tried before these would all be off in a minute, so it’s obvious these are her favorite, even if she can’t say it yet. Hey, actions speak louder than words, right? And she knows what shoes to grab when getting read to lift weights with daddy.

She sure does make me proud! After wearing her Ramblers outside in the dirt, mulch, and grass, as well as inside our home, they still look brand new. No threads coming undone or huge scrapes, even after climbing up and down the concrete at the playground.

She tripped on the cracks in those rocks more times than I can remember, but the shoes still stayed on and showed no signs of wear. We love Avery’s Soft Star Shoes, and besides being difficult to put at first (you figure it out fast), these are the only shoes we use now. Avery seems happy to roam about to discover new things in her Ramblers, like how sticks taste.

Or just what in the world Daddy is trying to show her now….

The soft natural leather, non-toxic colors, and hardy but flexible soles make for an awesome shoe for kids or adults and will ensure happy feet stay happy.

A big thanks to Soft Star Shoes for sending our precious girl these lovely shoes. I can’t recommend these shoes enough, and think their entire line has something for everyone. Check out their site and get your family’s feet ready to play hard, play safe, and keep it natural this summer.

After you find your perfect pair, make sure to take plenty of pictures and enter their monthly Fan Photo Contest to win $50 towards your next shoe purchase.

Now, excuse me while I test out my Dash RunAmocs with Avery.

Are We Dumb Parents With Smart-Phones?

If you’re a parent reading this, chances are you’re just as guilty as I am for staring at our smartphone with our kids around.

A recent post from Time.com shared the results of a study recording the behavior of 55 adult-child groupings at a fast food restaurant and captured how often the adult used their smartphone.

Don’t Text While Parenting — It Will Make You Cranky

A new study from Boston Medical Center reveals that parents who get absorbed by email, games or other apps have more negative interactions with their children, making them feel like they’re competing for attention with their parents’ gadgets

First off, any adult is not that smart for subjecting their kids and themselves to fast food, but that’s just how I feel. Poor nutrition aside, the interactions captured between the parent-child groups showed how damaging smartphone use can be when with your kids.

Before this was published, my wife and I had already stopped all technology use at the dinner table, but we are far from innocent when it comes to using our phones as Avery runs around our feet wanting attention. And she deserves it, poor girl, nothing is more important than giving her our love!

Since reading the article, we have become more aware of our use when Avery is around, but I know we’re still not perfect. Just look at my Instagram or aother social media accounts and it’s easy to see I have my phone practically shoved in her face A LOT! Sorry, Avery, please forgive me.

Maybe it’s different if you’re using your smartphone with your kid, but I know simply setting the tech aside and just playing is always the better option. Does this mean I’m going to stop capturing pics and videos of her? Nope, but scrolling through Facebook or Instagram feeds will be limited when our sweet girl is begging attention from now on. I mean, just look at that sweet face!
