Screw You, Teething and Sickness!

We’ve gone a few weeks since our last torturous teething episode, so I guess we were due for another one eventually. It’s difficult to prepare for these things as we never know the severity of one teething incident to the next. but shrill crying is almost ALWAYS expected.

Okay, crying, drooling, change in eating habits, extra fussy, and tired are others to expect as well. But this time, Avery has been running a mild fever which, although common for teething, is never fun.

Is it actual sickness, or strictly from teething? All we can do is make the best guess from her body language, and looking in her mouth which is no easy feat!

It started on Wednesday where everything seemed normal in the morning. Avery shot me her mean face as I scurried to make her breakfast. She’s a demanding one, even shaking her fist!

I moved quick and fed her a fresh batch of NuttZo Banana Bread which helped turn her back into cute-face Avery.

We carried on with our day by going into the garage for a workout and then went on a walk/run with our Golden, Abby, around the neighborhood. We stopped at the neighborhood playground so Avery could romp around in her new Soft Star Shoes and, of course, proceed to remove all of the mulch from the playground.

I tried to turn it into a game to get all of the wood pieces back into the pit, but she didn’t care to play. After playing the antithesis of my game for 20 minutes, we strolled back home for lunch and naptime.

As I prepared lunch, Avery started acting odd by not being very vocal. I waived it off as just being tired after catching her doing the all-to-common eye rub.

But then, her mood turned and I could do nothing right. On top of that, after struggling to get her to eat something, a major teething symptom appeared….

DSC_1080

Cranky slobber girl came out to play drive me insane! She took a few more bites of lunch and finally just straight up refused anything else. Since this is when I am trying to make my own lunch as well as dinner for Going Mom and myself, I threw what meal I could together and took Avery to get her down for a much needed nap.

She hasn’t fallen asleep in my arms for naptime in a long time (she does for my wife and that damn magic boob though!), but she was exhausted and fell into a slumber within 5 minutes. I laid her in her crib where she slept without a peep for almost 2 hours. Another oddity as of late.

I had high hopes that after getting some rest, she’d be all honky dory again. And when she flashed a grin like this right upon waking, I felt we were in the clear.

Smiling After Naptime

We went to the kitchen for some water and a snack before going on another walk. The first sign that she was still not her usual self shined through as she held her sippy cup while rocking her crazy after naptime hair. Her face makes it obvious that something is not right. But, still freakin’ cute, huh?

On top of this, Avery felt very warm and still was having trouble eating anything. I gave her small bite of chewy chestnut which she usually eats pretty well, but she kept that thing in her mouth for a solid 20 minutes! Yep, one little chestnut and she held it there like a Russian hamster (that’s for you and Hammy, Gary!) hoarding its food.

Those cheeks!!

Once Going Mom came home from work, she took Avery’s temperature and confirmed she had a mild fever of around 100°F. The rest of the evening was spent with Avery going back and forth from happy to crying, to pissed at the world, to “lights” (she stops everything to point up at lights), and back all over again.

After dinner (another struggle) and a bath, Kelley nursed Avery to sleep where she didn’t make a sound all night. The good thing about this is that it broke a 4 day streak of her pooping after going to sleep, the bad thing is that this meant she must really feel bad.

The next day, Avery woke up with her fever gone and in a seemingly chipper mood. Kelley sent a text asking how she was and not seeing signs of fussiness or difficulty eating, I said all was well. During our morning workout, I sent her a pic of Avery swinging her kettlebell as if peace had been restored.

Avery Swinging Kettlebell

Silly me, I was so WRONG! We went to Sprouts after our usual walk/run and while wearing her inside the store, the cranky slobber girl returned!

Her cries radiated throughout the aisles as I quickly tried to remember why the hell I even came to the store. My memory returned and I grabbed what we needed (and some of what we didn’t need) and drove back home.

For the next hour, Avery sat at my feet, crying loudly, as I tried to feed her and rush around the kitchen to put meals together. Poor kid, I tried holding her and pacing around and could feel the heat radiating off of her body again.

She wouldn’t eat much, but drank water and more breast milk than she’s had in a while. Avery fell asleep in my arms again, and I’m positive I could’ve played the trumpet in her face and she would remain asleep. Don’t worry, I don’t have a trumpet, and I’d probably just end up spitting into the thing without a sound being produced.

My loving wife dropped everything the second she got home and I told her the fever was back and took our happy girl away. Avery simply would not allow us to stop holding her. Kelley held her for the rest of the day as I cleaned and prepared dinner. But dinner was not had as Kelley just wanted to get Avery to sleep and held her as she nursed the poor girl to sleep.

It was a sad, quiet night, with this being the first fever-induced sickness we’ve experienced with Avery. Her temp got up to 102°F and her eyes were heavy all evening. At least Going Mom and I took the requisite parent with sick kid selfie and posted to social media.

Avery Sick with Mommy

After laying her in the crib, Kelley came out to eat dinner with me and we tried to watch a Walking Dead episode. Not 5 minutes into it though, we see Avery just sitting up in her crib. Silent, but just sitting there as her body slowly waved around.

After another 5 minutes of her still sitting, we went in and discovered problem, she threw up. I managed the sheet changing and diaper getting duty while Kelley cleaned Avery and changed her clothes. Kelley once again held Avery to comfort her to sleep as I came out to write this post. We decided to postpone watching zombies for the night since parenting comes first. Oh, and it’s on Netflix so we can play catch-up after Avery is well again!

Maybe I’ll happily report she’s back to her old self flashing smiles and eating better in my next post. Fingers crossed!

How do/did your kids handle the woes of teething?

Were they sudden or gradual signs?

Why I Now Cherish Our Teething Baby…..Kind of

It hurts right about.....EVERYWHERE!!
It hurts right about…..EVERYWHERE!!

All weekend long, Avery spent most of the time in a cranky, no good for nothing mood, and poor Going Mom didn’t get to see much of a happy baby. I’ve come to accept the fussiness from Avery since she is my “co-worker” every day of the week, but it bothers me when she is so cantankerous on the weekends.

I always hope Avery will be in a great mood all weekend long while Mommy is home so Kelley can see only Happy Avery, but it rarely happens to work out that way. I can’t explain how appreciative I am of Kelley for taking over most of the baby duty on the weekend, and actually, I really need to work on doing more since I’m guilty of taking advantage. Sorry, dear, I’ll do better! 🙂

After reading through a list of symptoms for a certain stage of teething, we quickly confirmed Avery was in a full blown session of sprouting molars. Biting, excessive pooping, very moody, hands in mouth, refusing food, etc. You name it, Avery was doing it.

Most of the signs started showing on Friday, and lasted until, well, they’re still here actually. Damn. But besides the agony of hearing your baby in agony, something happened late Sunday night/early Monday morning; we had a family bonding experience.

It was the usual scene in our house, we were in the living room and I was eating (I typically eat 2 big meals a day, and the 2nd one is the biggest and late at night) the second part of my meal and Kelley was asleep on the couch when Avery’s cries emanated through the monitor. Sometimes they’re really quick and only happen when she is shifting in her crib, this wasn’t one of those times.

Sitting up and screaming, my stubborn self tried to tell Kelley to just let it pass, but she’s too caring of a mother and quickly went to Avery’s aid to nurse her back to sleep. Or so she thought. Instead, Avery nursed some but then wouldn’t have anymore and instead more screaming ensued.

I was still sitting down with the last of my food when I heard the screaming start back up, and continued for several minutes. Finally, I put what I had back in the fridge and went to see how I could help. Before I made it to the nursery, Kelley appeared in the living room with our poor little Avery crying in pain.

We sat in the living room as Kelley held Avery and tried to figure out what to do. Turn on the TV? No, too stimulating. Give her homeopathic teething pills? No, too ineffective at this point. Pet the cat? Ohhh, yes, that worked…….for a minute. Our attempts were futile so we continued sitting there holding Avery and hoping she’d finally calm down and go back to sleep.

Hoping only gets you far. After taking turns holding her, I suggested we just lay on the rug in the middle of our living room and hope she falls asleep with us or we’ll all join in on the crying fest. We grabbed pillows from the couch and laid down next to each other with Avery to see what she would do.

More crying followed, interspersed with yawns and putting her hands in her mouth. Going Mom was taking a beating from Avery’s flailing limbs, so I took over holding our restless baby. Still crying and squirming in my arms, we were at our wit’s end on what else to do, so I just laid flat on my back and had Avery resting on her back on my stomach. I mean, why not, right?

Well, the crying stopped, but every half second she’d turn her head to the left or right and swing her arms around. I felt like it was a lost cause, but then Avery grew silent and her arms hung to the side and head stayed still. She was quiet and almost asleep!

Kelley and I exchanged glances in disbelief as it happened so suddenly, but we didn’t want to risk testing her. Part of me felt extremely guilty after my dear wife spent so long trying to comfort Avery and after she became so exhausted, she winds up falling asleep on me. But then again, maybe my wife didn’t really want a 20+ pound baby lying on her chest on the flat, hard ground.

My lower back was in pain and my feet couldn’t stretch all the way out, but there was no way I was messing this up! She was sliding a little, so I slowly turned Avery over on her stomach while still on my chest and secured her as best as I could. Kelley and I, laying side by side on our living room floor, said “I love you” to each other and fell asleep.

Okay, I didn’t sleep much as I had to keep readjusting Avery and my urge to pee was increasing by the minute. Finally, after about an hour and a half, I really had to pee and didn’t see Avery lasting much longer on my chest anyway. Using my Turkish Get-up skills, I stood up with Avery still asleep and laid her in her crib. She hardly budged, poor girl was worn out!

Our bed welcomed Kelley and me as we transferred from the floor, but as uncomfortable as it was, I will always look back on that night and smile. We rarely get to hold Avery to our chest when sleeping like we did almost daily as a newborn, so this rare occasion was a treat. And to think, I didn’t even want my wife going in there in the first place! Thank you, Kelley, for not listening to me! 🙂

Do you have any sweet memorable moments during a stressful time?

Sweetness aside, how long did teething last for your baby?

A “Second Wind” with Coffee and Our Baby Walks….Kinda

After our “relaxing” day of handing Avery over to strangers while shopping for beer, searching for a giant dog named Polly, and injuring my foot, we were hoping to actually take it easy the next day before heading back home.

Erin’s baby shower wasn’t until early afternoon, so all of us decided to try and find a better coffee shop than the prior day’s disappointment. Kelley, Avery, and I left for the main campus hangout fully expecting to find Starbucks as our only caffeinated option.

Thankfully, we decided to walk/limp (stupid stress fracture) a small loop before heading inside the largest coffee chain. That’s when we stumbled upon a unique coffeehouse named Second Wind.

Intrigued and eager to find something other than Starbucks, we walked inside and were immediately greeted by a kind barista and the best looking menu ever!

DSC_0499

Have you ever seen a place like this? Order anything on the menu and donate if can/want to, but it’s not required. Of course, you’d have to be a big ass to not pay anything to the hard workers, and I actually gave more than I normally would elsewhere.

After the barista filled us in on the business’ history, we ordered our drinks and found a comfy sofa to relax on. I was still in awe of such a fabulous business model and went back up front to pick the barista’s brain. She was really into the place and you could tell she put a lot of effort into every drink she created.

Kelley had a tasty dry, non-fat cappuccino and my first drink was an iced Americano with no cream or sugar. I downed that pretty quick and went back for a double shot espresso with a cup of their drip coffee. Wow, the straight espresso was out of this world fantastic, and after finished this and the cup of coffee, I had a major coffee buzz. Naturally, I had one more Americano and finally called it quits.

Once Sean and Erin arrived with Brooklyn, we all sat and talked a while as we tried to keep our girls contained.

Emphasis on “tried”….

Avery was being a bit unruly most of the day and she wasn’t showing signs of letting up anytime soon. Sean tried to calm her with little luck.

DSC_0525

I decided I’d take a shot at keeping Avery from getting too fussy, so it was time to use her flexibility to our advantage. Not sure why, but she gets a “kick” out of having her feet in her face.

DSC_0539

Not that she needs our help, she puts her legs up like this every day all by herself. It makes diaper changes a blast. Sense my sarcasm…

With our caffeine in full effect, we left the comfortable setting of Second Wind to walk around our old stomping grounds; the OU campus.

DSC_0558

Still beautiful as always. I would’ve enjoyed it more if every limping step I took wasn’t so painful. Despite the pain, we made sure to stop and take happy family photos.

Well, at least Avery was looking; that’s a win in my book! Sean, Erin, and Brooklyn posed for a snapshot as well.

The Texas heat had followed us up to Oklahoma, and we were ready to head back to Sean and Erin’s house to relax before the girls went to the baby shower. Sean has been fighting an inured back for months, and with Erin being 35 weeks pregnant and my stress-fractured foot, we joked that Kelley was the only able-bodied person with us. Naturally, she quickly walked ahead and took a shot of her ailing companions…

DSC_0589

Back at their pad, we lounged around as Avery and Brooklyn played around the giant dogs. It’s a blurry picture, but I can’t get over how large Hudson is next to Avery. He’s the sweetest dog, but everywhere I turned, he seemed to be RIGHT THERE, staring.

DSC_0596

Avery’s dress was adorable on her, and I couldn’t help but take several photos. I like this one; what do you think?

DSC_0609

It fits just right and she’ll grow out of it within weeks if not sooner, so I’m glad we captured the moment now. Kelley had her looking snazzy in the dress and she said Avery received many compliments at Erin’s baby shower.

Sean and I hung out in the living room with Brooklyn while the baby shower was in full swing, and once prompted, we jumped in the car to catch the end and reunite with our wives. From there, we were heading back home to Texas, but first we asked for a group a photo. After several attempts and a very moody baby, we settled on this as the best picture….

DSC_0638

Hmmm, everyone smiling but Avery. That’s our daughter!!

In her defense, she had a very short nap and was probably tired from all of the day’s activity. Her drowsiness was apparent the instant we began the 2.5 hour drive back home as she fell asleep right after getting strapped in. That is, until, less than an hour later!

Yep, she woke up earlier than we thought and decided to scream, cry, yell, and just be loud. We normally don’t have the radio on when driving together, and even if we did, it would be pointless trying to listen over the screams.

2.5 hours seemed like an eternity with Avery’s crabbiness and immediately after turning into our driveway, Kelley brought Avery inside to feed her in hopes of calming her down. My wife, being the wonderful mother she is, gets very worked up when Avery is crying with an apparent need, so I know it was driving her crazy for the entire ride.

We planned on catching an episode of Orange is the New Black that night, but it was almost midnight by the time we were settled, and Kelley knew she wouldn’t stay awake. So we pushed it off for the next night and called it a day…..a very long day.

I’m not sure what caused Avery’s extreme fussiness that day, but we can see a new tooth that has pushed through. So, obviously, like any parent would do, we’re going to say teething is to blame!

Have you ever been to a “donations only” type of restaurant?

As a parent, to you find generic reasons to blame on your kid’s moodiness?
